Castle Howard: Library of the Four Winds

The Brief

To provide production management, site management and technical direction for Library of the Four Winds, an ambitious public art installation by internationally renowned artist and stage designer Es Devlin, transforming the historic Temple of the Four Winds at Castle Howard into an immersive reading and reflection space. Created to support the UK's National Year of Reading and the Vanbrugh 300 celebrations, the installation combined architecture, literature, sound, projection and public participation within one of Britain's most significant heritage settings.

Project Highlights

Delivered comprehensive production, site and technical management for a major public artwork within the Grade I-listed landscape of Castle Howard, carefully balancing artistic ambition with the operational requirements of a historic heritage environment.
Worked collaboratively with artist Es Devlin, scenic contractors, technical suppliers, video and sound designers, and the Castle Howard team to realise a complex multi-disciplinary installation combining architecture, literature, media and public engagement
Supported the creation of a striking illuminated, revolving bookshelf sculpture at the heart of the Temple, constructed from hundreds of books and designed to celebrate reading, storytelling and shared cultural experience.
Managed the integration of LED and media systems both inside and outside the Temple, including scrolling literary quotations and text installations that animated the structure and connected the artwork to the surrounding landscape.
Helped realise one of the most high-profile cultural projects presented as part of Castle Howard's Vanbrugh 300 programme, celebrating the 300th anniversary of architect Sir John Vanbrugh through contemporary artistic response.
