The Brief

The Production Family partnered with Two Tails Productions and Royal Museums Greenwich to create Astronomers Take Over, a major semi-permanent immersive experience at the National Maritime Museum. As Principal Contractor, the team delivered every aspect of the project, from scenic construction and technical integration to installation and health & safety. Featuring interactive Mars missions, immersive galaxy environments and hands-on learning spaces, the experience transformed a temporary educational facility into a landmark visitor attraction that blends scientific discovery with immersive design.

Project Highlights

  • Appointed as Principal Contractor, leading project management, production delivery, health & safety and technical coordination from concept through to public opening.
  • Delivered a two-year semi-permanent installation within a nationally significant museum environment, balancing creative ambition with the operational requirements of a heritage institution.
  • Designed, fabricated and installed a series of immersive space-themed environments, creating a hands-on educational experience for family audiences and young learners.
  • Constructed a range of interactive exhibits, including opportunities for visitors to land a Mars Rover, explore a giant telescope installation and engage with professional astronomers in dedicated learning spaces.
  • Delivered all scenic construction through The Production Family's in-house workshop before assembling and commissioning the installation on site.
  • Integrated complex technical elements throughout the experience, including custom LED installations within the Galaxy Box environment and specialist lighting features across multiple zones.
  • Ensured museum-grade standards of durability, accessibility, safety and finish, creating a robust long-term installation suitable for high visitor volumes and continuous public operation.
  • Successfully transformed the temporary relocation of the STEM Learning Centre into a destination experience, combining immersive storytelling, interactive learning and visitor engagement.
